“There can scarcely have been two more salient concerns for senior managers in multi-national companies over recent years than the management of risk and the exploitation of emerging markets. Carl’s text not only provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject of risk management but also shows how the principles of risk management can, and indeed should be extended to exploiting opportunities in emerging markets.”
Ian Turner, Director of Graduate Business Studies, Henley Management College
“In Risk Management in Emerging Markets Carl very clearly helps the reader understand the nature of the unique risks encountered in emerging markets and discusses a variety of methods for managing such risks in a clear and accessible way. The book captures significant practical experience in a field and markets that risk managers can no longer afford to ignore.”

The phrase emerging markets is one that has entered general use over the last 5-10 years. Equally the word risk has become more and more commonplace as a quick glance through any daily paper will reveal yet few people think consciously about risk as a subject and even less about risk management. Both these subjects are defined and explained in this book which addresses it from the point of view of the business manager operating in or dealing with emerging markets. This book is not about short term investing in emerging stock markets but in long term real assets and thus fills a gap in the market not addressed unitl now.
As the world has developed and the pace of change has accelerated risk and emerging markets have become closely entwined. Emerging markets offer many opportunities as developed markets reach maturity, growth slows and margins come under pressure. What better then than to leap into the fast growing markets of Asia or Latin America?
As many companies have found out turning opportunities into profitable growth in such economies is not that easy. In recent years it has become more difficult and the prospects are that this will continue to be the case. As a result of failing to understand the markets they were entering, the risks they faced or how to mitigate those risks many have overextended themselves and gone out of business or, at best, had to retreat at some cost.
This book addresses all these issues starting with the basic concepts of risk and risk management, through describing the aspects of emerging markets that make them different to how to address risk in such situations to improve the probability of success.
There can be no guarantees in the volatile world we operate in especially when doing business in emerging markets but it is better to enter that cauldron with eyes open and some safety nets that will help you when, almost inevitably, something unexpected happens. This book is intended to open your eyes and provide ideas as to how to put those safety nets in place. Forewarned is forearmed.
Can you afford not to know more about risk and how to deal with it effectively?
