Rethinking of the relationship between land use and water resources will be essential to creating sustainable urban environments in the future. Traditional methods for protecting people and property from water-related hazards – like drought, flooding, and poor water quality – have involved centralized, large-scale civil works. A new model must be developed that integrates urbanization and natural ecosystems. This address looks at the changes needed to bring civil and environmental engineering to the forefront of decisions regarding land use, patterns of urbanization, and resource management. These changes are needed to establish healthy, functional urban ecosystems as a necessary foundation for public health and safety, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
