Imagine life in the Arctic coastal region of northeastern Siberia, one of the most extreme and inhospitable climates in the world, where winter temperatures plummet to more than -100 deg F (-73.3 deg C) and winds howl at more than 100 mph (160.9 kmh). The Chukchi, one of several indigenous tribes of the region, inhabited this land more than 3,000 years ago. A primitive village people, the Chukchi lived in permanent settlements along the coast. In this environment, where mere survival was a challenge of daily life, the Chukchi developed a breed of dog that was the progenitor of the contemporary Siberian Husky and a key to the tribe’s subsistence and culture.
