Book Description
In this comprehensive volume, the editors have gathered together some of the most outstanding contributors in the field of pediatric medicine to examine the wide-ranging applications and promise of the use of hypnosis with children and adolescents. In Part 1, the broad framework of hypnosis is presented. The concepts, developmental considerations, approaches to induction, hypnotic ability, hypnosis with families and ethical considerations are thoroughly reviewed. Parts 2 and 3 focus on key psychological and medical applications of hypnosis. The medical section describes the integration of hypnosis from acute care settings to the operating room.Throughout the book, clinical vignettes help the reader understand the hypnotic encounter while supportive evidence, strategies and caveats provide insights. This volume will surely become one of the most invaluable sources of practical clinical knowledge that will enrich the repertoire of all child health care providers. It will be consulted again and again by readers who wish to bring hypnosis to their therapeutic encounters with children.
Editorial Reviews
Review
This is a very comprehensive manual for anyone who wishes to work with young people and it would also be a good reference book for those therapists already working in this field. As well as setting out strategies for dealing with most of the problems presented by children in a therapy setting (anxiety, fears and phobias, unwanted habits etc.) many case studies are included to illustrate the efficacy of the strategies used. The book also touches on Family Therapy since, as we are all well aware, children’s problems often stem from family dynamics and these are also covered. Just in case there is anything missing from this book, it also includes a huge bibliography of other resources which can be referred to if necessary. This is not a book that is easy to read from cover to cover but needs to be treated as a text book, to refer to when the answer to a particular problem is required, although I’m sure many therapists will find it fascinating enough to want to read it all the way through. This is a wonderfully comprehensive book. Clearly the writers have pooled vast amounts of resources regarding child development, effective hypnotic techniques, the treatments of a range of disorders, working with pain and palliative care. It is packed full of theory, research evidence, clinical vignettes and treatment programmes/hypnotic scripts. This is not a quick read but it is well worth it as it will equip the practitioner with just how to work with children and adolescents effectively and creatively. Just in reading this I have found that all my clients are benefiting from this book and not just children I will be recommending this to our students.
