Review
“This volume contains nine articles on the recent growth and development of the Chinese economy. Editor
Grivoyannis (Yeshiva Univ.) provides an introductory chapter that offers historical context on China’s economic
development and a concluding chapter on international implications of China’s economic performance. All other
contributors, with the exception of one residing in South Korea, are from China. They provide many insights into the
transition economy based on firsthand experience. In addition to the more traditional topics such as the government’s
role in the economy and land property rights, there are some interesting chapters not typically found in similar
volumes. For example, one chapter explores private finance, which has caused great publicity and social unrest in
recent years. Another chapter argues that the rising saving rate is partly attributed to dramatically higher education
costs, and one chapter is entirely devoted to mathematics education in China. Those interested in China’s economy
and society will find this work of value. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels of students; faculty; researchers;
professionals.” – CHOICE
