Who should be investing in the emerging markets?
Everyone with money to invest should be investing in emerging markets since emerging market countries are growing at five times faster than developed markets. Emerging markets also have more foreign reserves than developed markets as well as lower debt than developed markets. Just as important as these factors is the importance of diversity. Emerging markets behave differently than developed markets and thus should be used to diversify portfolios. Finally, emerging equity markets now represent more than 30% of the world’s stock market capitalization–the asset class is too important to ignore.

What is the one piece of advice you’ll give readers about investing in emerging markets?
It would have to be to invest systematically and be patient in your investment process. Set aside a certain amount of money you want to invest. Then spread that over a few years with equal monthly investments so that you can benefit from the fact that bull markets last longer than bear markets and it goes up more in percentage terms than bear markets go down.

About the Author

Mark Mobius, Ph.D., Executive Chairman of Templeton Emerging Markets Group, currently directs analysts based in Templeton’s 17 emerging markets offices and manages the emerging markets portfolios.
Dr. Mobius has spent more than 40 years working in emerging markets all over the world. He joined Franklin Templeton Investments in 1987 as president of the Templeton Emerging Markets Fund, Inc. In 1999, he was appointed joint chairman of the Global Corporate Governance Forum Investor Responsibility Taskforce of the World Bank and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
