Review

This book is a refreshing read. The reader will discover some surprising finds … and it is interesting to find out how civilian and naval dentistry have influenced each other. Compared to the numerous thick and heavy hard-back dental books out there, this is a much more appropriate material for bed-time reading! – British Dental Journal, October 2012

Book Description

The first volume of a History of Dentistry in the Royal Navy by Nick
Daws and John Holland covered the period 1905 to 1964, taking the
reader on a fascinating trip that started with the birth of the Royal
Naval Dental Services. It covered a period in history that saw, among
many other challenges, two World Wars and the settling into the
political, cultural, economic and military face-off between Western
democracies and the Eastern Bloc. This second volume, by E J Grant,
picks up the story at a time when technological advances were leading
the world into a dangerous and uncertain era; nuclear proliferation,
terrorism and interstate quarrels challenged policy makers and
strategists. Born of such tensions was the Falklands Conflict in which
no less than 14 RN dental officers were deployed in the ships of the
Task Force and with the Royal Marines. The reader will find a number of
gripping eyewitness accounts of the experiences of those who were thus deployed. The end of the Cold War gave momentary hope in 1989 for a more peaceful world but, within a couple of years, Operation Granby, the First Gulf War, introduced new military alliances and new military challenges.

Like its predecessor, this book tells the story of its times through the eyes of those in the Naval Dental Services, drawing on firsthand accounts of deployed and headquarters’ activity. For those who experienced the period, the stories will bring back clear memories of the events; for those who were not part of the story, there may be a surprising resemblance to the objectives, challenges and successes of today’s RNDS. The book includes 30 black and white illustrations.
