Book Description

Things aren't going to plan for one family in Withernsea. Pieces are falling off Martin's milk float as quickly as he's losing customers and something's up with Kath's kitchen sink. Billy is pinning his hopes of a place at art college on a revealing portrait of Dolly Parton, whilst Sophie's dreams of becoming a Jiu-Jitsu teacher might be disappearing down the plug hole. And amid the dreaming, dramas and dirty dishes, something has to give. But will it be Kath or the kitchen sink?

Chosen to open the Bush Theatre's exciting new venue on London's Uxbridge Road and to continue its hugely successful policy of presenting the best of the UK's new writing for the stage, The Kitchen Sink is an irresistibly funny and tender play about big dreams and small changes. that delighted critics and audiences alike.

This edition also includes the brilliantly comic and moving monologue for a teenage girl, Spacewang, commissioned by Hull Truck. Nora is picking up signals from the spice rack and learning the space languages off of the internet. Bunking school, she's off to town with the colandar because something's coming and Nora needs to be there when it arrives..

Winner of the George Devine Award 2012, The Kitchen Sink was also the first recipient of the new Simon Gray Award, set up to enable the London production of a young writer's work, in memory of the late playwright and diarist.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Five Stars: Comic, poignant and utterly gripping....Wells wrings more riches out of seemingly throwaway lines than a lot of writers manage in an entire play...Outstanding --Evening Standard

In its own quiet and clever way, this is a classic comedy of moving out and moving on but also sentimentally acknowledging that there's no place like home...consistently funny, beautifully written....a small gem. --Whatsonstage.com

He writes with a mixture of acute observation, emotional empathy and a love of eccentricity, so the evening is full of humorous moments as well as sad and touching ones....both moving and funny...at the end you could hug them all. --The Stage
