Book Description

Luigi Zoja views the origin and evolution of the father from a Jungian perspective. He argues that the father’s role in bringing up children is a social construction that has been subject to change throughout history – and looks at the consequences of this, along with the crisis facing fatherhood today. The Father will be welcomed by people from a wide variety of disciplines, including practitioners and students of psychology, sociology and anthropology, and by the educated general reader.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“… the book is interesting and at times fascinating. Its strength lies not in detailed analysis of the psyche but in the broad canvas he paints: the function of the father through the ages in promoting a responsible and disciplined male identity and the comsequences of the decline of the authority of the father in western culture… I would recommend it to everybody interested in a discussion about the history of fatherhood, the development of masculinity and the consequences of the decline of the father and of parental authority in contemporary culture.”Christina Wieland, in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Volume 16, No. 3
