Editorial Reviews

Review

This book captures the cultural and historical essence of European geography. The latest edition uses vivid images and impressive maps to highlight the geographical landscapes and patterns of this region. The authors’ approach challenges readers to engage with the dynamic nature of Europe in the global economic and political arenas as well as in its diverse ethnic and social realms. In short, The European Culture Area offers an important critical perspective on the geographic relevance of Europe. — Ann M. Oberhauser, West Virginia University The authors have carefully considered the best way to capture the themes so vital to understanding today’s Europe. Well organized, approachable, and enlightening. — David H. Kaplan, Kent State University The new edition expertly refines Jordan-Bychkov’s wonderfully readable approach to the formation of modern Europe. It retains the masterful historical detail and clear cartography that were hallmarks of previous editions. Most importantly, the authors have brought the text up to date by rendering the contemporary forces reshaping Europe-and our means of understanding these changes-in keeping with the cultural-historical approach that students need for understanding the region. — Carl T. Dahlman, Miami University I am immensely impressed with The European Culture Area. Much more than a geography textbook, it’s become essential background for my teaching on contemporary European politics. Besides offering a highly informative discussion of conventional geography as a non-specialist thinks of it, the book’s topical chapters on demography, social and ethnic groups; religion; the European state system; and European integration all are deeply researched and deftly and fairly written. — Ronald Tiersky, Amherst College Without any doubt, this is by far the best undergraduate textbook on the geography of Europe on the market. This latest edition of The European Culture Area continues to excel in its thorough historical-geographic topical approach to explain the fundamentals of European geography. At the same time, the book explores the latest developments in Europe and how interactions with other world regions and the global economy have affected these developments. — Petr Pavlinek, University of Nebraska at Omaha
