Book Description

When Bex gets an audition for The Tingle Factor, she begs geeky guitarist Matthew to accompany her, hoping he’ll lift her performance. But the judges want Matthew – not Bex! Bex swallows her envy, and persuades a reluctant Matthew to take part by offering to help with his family. While Matthew gets swept up in the world of reality TV, it’s Bex who has to deal with his sweet, affection-starved sister and his angry, disabled mother. Warm, thought-provoking and very funny.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“There is plenty to like in this story. The main characters are fresh and authentic, allowing readers to identify easily with them, and whatever mistakes they make they do come over, in the end, as likeable people. The topic will draw readers too, because it is so pervasive in current culture, and there is much vicarious pleasure to be gained both from Matthew’s success and from the ritual shaming of his nastier rivals. What’s more, Bex and Matthew find themselves in situations which are rich ground for comedy, and this adds a welcome lightness . will provide excellent opportunities for thought and discussion. ” – The Bookbag

Review

“Hilarious, thought-provoking, moving… nd very topical now the nation’s favourite talent show is back on TV, The Bex Factor will appeal to anyone who has dreams of stardom. When Bex auditions for a television show, she takes her geeky friend Matt along for moral support … but when Matt gets chosen, Bex’s world falls apart! Contrasting the shallow world of TV celebrities with the characters’ real lives, this gets a Yes from us!” – Red House

Review

“I was instantly drawn into this novel by Bex’s voice, and I found her and Matthew compelling characters. They tell their stories in alternating chapters, allowing us to see two sides to the story from the very start. The book covers some serious themes, especially in Matthew’s home life, but there are many light touches… should make talent show fans think twice about what might go on behind the scenes of their favourite programmes… A very entertaining read for ages 10+.” – Chicklish
