Book Description

A ‘fast-forward’ acting course covering all the essential techniques an actor needs to know and use – with a suite of exercises to put each technique into practice.

The Acting Book offers various ways to analyse a text and to create character, using not only the established processes of Stanislavsky and Meisner, but also new ones developed by the author over many years of teaching drama students. It also sets out a wide range of rehearsal techniques and improvisations, and it brims over with inventive practical exercises designed to stimulate the actor’s imagination and build confidence.

The book will be invaluable to student actors as an accompaniment to their training, to established actors who wish to refresh their technique, and to drama teachers at every level.

What more can any aspiring actor want than a three-year course presented in just one volume?

John Abbott is the Head of Acting at the Arts Educational Schools in London. In the past he worked extensively as a professional actor. This combination of practical and educational experience ensures that his books are always extremely approachable and hugely informative. The Acting Book continues this trend and is a must read for any one interested in the process of theatre and the art of acting.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Witty, unassuming… Anyone involved in actor training is likely to find this book a welcome breath of fresh air because its approach is so gloriously unpretentious. And yet it contains a wealth of Abbot’s enormous experience as actor, director and teacher. –The Stage

For actors, teachers or trainee actors, whichever hat you put on you can see how useful it would be… In other words, in this incredibly informative book, Abbott enables us to have our cake and eat it (several times over.)… This book is crammed with ideas you may not know or which may serve as useful re-alerts to what you’re doing… Abbott’s book is one nobody should ignore. –reviewsgate.com
