This volume offers a collection of essays useful for analyzing and comparing terrorist movements, especially in relation to Islamic terrorism. It examines the uses of violence by terrorism: the “who,” the “how” and the “when.” Present day terrorism is a modern phenomenon to be distinguished from classical insurgency, revolution, guerrilla warfare, or coups d’état; it is mainly directed at modern societies, whether from a religious-fundamentalist point of view, or from radical social and ecological movements. In short, terrorism uses largely fabricated ways of thought for political-polemological ends. About the Author
Diogo Pires Aurélio is a Research Fellow at the Philosophy of Language Institute/New University of Lisbon, Portugal, where he is also Professor of Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Law. He has authored several books and articles on modern political thought, and headed the research project Global Justice and International Terrorism (2007–2010). João Tiago Proença is a Research Fellow at the Philosophy of Language Institute/New University of Lisbon, Portugal, and co-edited Hannah Arendt and the Political (Lisbon, 2006).
