Book Description

Number fifty four in NHB’s Drama Classics Series, providing the world’s great drama at a great price. The introduction to this edition of Tartuffe includes a short biography of Moliere and chronology of his work; a guide to what happens in the play; a short history of the play and its context; and a brief guide to characterisation, language, staging and and themes.

Condemned by the authoriries and banned for five years in Moliere’s day, “Tartuffe” is a satire on religious hypocrisy. Tartuffe worms his way into Orgon’s household, blinding the master of the house with his religious devotion, and almost succeeds in his attempts to seduce his wife and disinherit his children before the final unmasking.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Few finer studies of hypocrisy and zeal have been penned…not simply a farce about a knave and a fool: it becomes a rich comedy about the ability of a self-deceiving hypocrite to prey on a religious fanatic. –The Guardian
