This book is presented in three parts as follows:
Part I is composed of four chapters, which focuses on theoretical basis. Chapter One is an introductory chapter. Chapter Two discusses the physical layer as it relates to tactical radios. Chapter Three discusses the DLL layer and Information Theory in the context of tactical networks. Chapter Four covers the MAC and Network Layers as they apply to tactical networks, with some focus on Queuing Theory.
Part II is composed of three chapters and focuses on the evolution of tactical radios. In Chapter Five, legacy radios are presented with Link-16, as an example of its generation of spread-spectrum frequency-hopping radios. The Tactical Internet with IP touch points is introduced as well. Chapter Six covers the IP-based tactical radio, with a focus on the JTRS WNW waveform as the representative of its generation of radios. The Global Information Grid vision is introduced as the natural evolution of the Tactical Internet. Chapter Seven covers cognitive radios as the futuristic generation of tactical radios.
Part III is composed of four chapters and is dedicated to the open architecture model of tactical networks and the seamless interoperability between tactical and commercial technologies. Chapter Eight introduces an open architecture model for tactical networks. Chapter Nine details some of this open architecture model’s ICDs and the deviations from the commercial model that require add-on functions to the different protocol stack layers. Chapter Ten is dedicated to the integration of commercial cellular technology into the tactical theatre. Chapter Eleven discusses the challenges of network management and Network Operations in tactical networks.
