This book presents tactical wireless communications and networks in a breakdown model. The ultimate goal is to help different types of readers, such as graduate students specializing in communications, or simply new comers to the field. This book introduces tactical wireless communications and networks in terms of protocol stack layers (just like commercial wireless communications and networks), and points to the differences and similarities between tactical and commercial models. Another group that may benefit from this text is engineers working in the field. This book should help them get a better understanding of how to face the challenges in the field through the use of concepts and design approaches introduced here, such as the open architecture model, and cross layer signaling. Hopefully this text can help engineers and scientists gear tactical network designs to a more manageable model, by breaking the general problem of a tactical wireless network node, into smaller entities of what needs to be done at each stack layer. I have long been an advocate for open architecture in tactical wireless communications networking. For the most part, I am presenting tactical wireless networks with an open architecture framework. Tactical wireless networks are not the same as commercial wireless networks by any means. However, some engineering concepts that have proven successful in the commercial model, especially the open architecture concept, can be adapted by tactical wireless networks.

About the Author
Dr. George F. Elmasry received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt and a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He has extensive industrial experience in commercial and defense telecommunications and is currently leading XPRT Solutions which specializes in communications systems for the Department of Defense.
Dr. Elmasry has experience with technical task leads, and team building for middle and upper management. He has over 50 publications and patents in network management, quality of service and resource management, network and transport layer coding, joint source and channel coding, modeling and simulation, cross layer signaling, multidimensional interleaving and spread spectrum communications.
In addition, Dr. Elmasry has been a member of the technical committee for the annual Military Communication Conference (Milcom) since 2003. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International, a member of Sigma Xi, and a member of Alpha Epsilon Lambda – NJIT graduate-student honor society. Dr. Elmasry holds countless awards, including the prestigious Hashimoto Award for achievement and academic excellence in electrical and computer engineering.
