Book Description

Sustainability of Construction Materials, Second Edition, explores anincreasingly important aspect of construction. In recent years, serious consideration has been given to environmental and societal issues in the manufacturing, use, disposal, and recycling of construction materials.

This book provides comprehensive and detailed analysis of the sustainability issues associated with these materials, mainly in relation to the constituent materials, processing, recycling, and lifecycle environmental impacts.

The contents of each chapter reflect the individual aspects of the material that affect sustainability, such as the preservation and repair of timber, the use of cement replacements in concrete, the prevention and control of metal corrosion and the crucial role of adhesives in wood products.

  • Provides helpful guidance on lifecycle assessment, durability, recycling, and the engineering properties of construction materials
  • Fully updated to take on new developments, with an additional nineteen chapters added to include natural stone, polymers and plastics, and plaster products
  • Provides essential reading for individuals at all levels who are involved in the construction and selection, assessment and use, and maintenance of materials

From the Back Cover

Sustainability is an increasingly important aspect of construction. In recent years, serious consideration has been given to environmental and societal issues in the manufacturing, use, disposal and recycling of construction materials. This revised edition presents a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the sustainability associated with construction materials.

Following the introductory chapter, initial themes include principles of sustainability and life-cycle-analysis, local properties controlling materials sustainability, nanotechnologies for sustainable construction, and sustainability of glass, metals and timber in construction. The book continues by discussing the sustainability and durability of different construction materials such as aggregates, natural stone, compressed earth and bituminous materials. Sustainability of cement, concrete and cement replacement materials in construction are also covered. Other chapters provide information on sustainability of geopolymers, vegetable fibers, fiber reinforced polymers, waste paper, waste rubber, raw sewage sludge and gypsum products in cement based and construction applications.

The second edition of Sustainability of Construction Materials contains original chapters that have been fully updated to take on board new developments, and these are accompanied by additional new chapters, with each one addressing a particular category or aspect of sustainability in construction materials. Design and construction engineers, materials scientists and all those involved in selection, assessment, maintenance and use of construction materials will find this new edition a vital read.
