Book Description

Whether you make narratives, documentaries, news shows, training videos, podcasts, games, or some other media, sound has a great impact on what people see, believe, and remember. When you dedicate attention to every element that makes up the whole soundtrack — dialogue, sound effects, and music — your story will hold more meaning for the audience, and you’ll deliver your message in a more memorable way. Thankfully, putting together a better soundtrack is the easiest, fastest, and most effective way to make your production better. SOUNDTRACK SUCCESS will show you how to do it. It’s a non-software-specific guide to the entire realm of audio post-production, with particular attention paid to fixing problems, sweetening sound, and pulling together a complete soundtrack. You’ll learn how to use dialogue, voiceover, walla, backgrounds, sound effects, Foley, and music, and you’ll discover how to record, edit, mix, master, and deliver high-quality and high-impact soundtracks. The companion DVD includes video tutorials and examples that further demonstrate the many concepts and techniques described in the book. This complete primer is your key to making soundtracks that soar.

Who This Book Is For

This book is for storytellers who produce content for theaters, TV, video, games, and the web. It will also appeal to those who aren’t audio pros but who still need quality sound work on their productions, such as independent filmmakers and other low- to medium-budget content producers. The book will also appeal to music composers and producers, game sound/music designers, animators, audio instructors and their students, and film/TV/video enthusiasts. Unfortunately, try as it might, this book can’t contain everything about audio and soundtracks. As I gaze across my bookshelves, I see thousands of pages from books and websites, along with dozens of DVDs and the remnants of countless hours in classrooms and many days and nights in darkened rooms spent honing my craft. All of these resources have served as my education. What I endeavor to do here is to relate the key concepts, workflow, and practical techniques that you can apply to your soundtracks. This won’t be the definitive guide to soundtrack creation and success–no single book ever could be–but this resource aspires to serve as a detailed primer and a welcome reference to use for your storytelling career. After all, it was William Yeats who said, “Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire.” As you work through this book, I hope it becomes just the spark you need.
