Book Description

“Behind every weakness hides a talent!“ is Dr. Karin Wettig’s personal revelation. With her divorce came an almost total loss of her speaking voice. When voice therapy didn’t heal her, she decided to sing. Leaving her home, her husband, her friends and her business in northern Germany behind her, she went to pursue her dream to sing Belcanto Arias.

In Munich her adventure on the way to her authentic voice began. Vocal coaches, Belcanto teachers & Opera Schools were as disillusioning as her experience in a famous local choir. A master class with Ann Reynolds inspired her to write her first Belcanto Book about the Italian method for singers. Still not satisfied with her own voice, she started analyzing Maria Callas & exploring body therapies like Alexander Technique, Rolfing, Cantieni, Yoga. Lonely nights in spooky churches, practicing arias from Farinelli to Mozart, Bellini, Rossini & Verdi helped her develop her opera voice, while her “Sherlock Holmes nose” made her detect how her role model, Maria Callas, had trained herself to such a perfection. Her insights about theory & practice of Belcanto are defined in this book by a practical training for every singer on stage.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This Belcanto Book is the result of over 20 years of experience with voice training, body training, correction of misuse of body and voice, in a short the whole path towards an opera voice which functions effortlessly. When I lost my speaking voice during a divorce years ago, the desire to correct this became an obsession as nothing seemed to work or to help for me and I ended up with opera singing. Then the vocal problems went into the background and I became obsessed to develop this true singing voice as I loved to sing since my earliest childhood. After having met so many methods of singing, styles of vocal training, opera schools and teachers with voice problems too, but teaching voice anyway… I gave up on all this, sat down and looked inside what I really wanted. Then the answer was, I would love to sing like Callas and some other divas of the times of Caruso like Tetrazzini or Galli Curci…. I gave up on teachers and sat evenings in front of the computer listening mostly to Callas, but also to Sutherland or Freni watching what they did with their voices and their bodies. Then my personal research program started for myself in the church during the night where I could try out whatever I liked to.
It was an adventure journey to discover not only the vocal functions, but also what part the body played during the production of an opera aria. With fascination I went to explore this more and more, then I started reading about anatomy, acustic phenomena and the influence of breathing, trying out new exercises until I ended up with my original coloratura soprano. Thanks to Callas and her passion that infected me to get there. After I found the keys to effortless voice production and a healthy body use, it was a great pleasure for me to teach that by writing some entertaining books about the technique as I think I developped some easy to do exercises which can help you a lot to find a healthy way to your authentic voice.

The message I can give to anybody who starts with vocal training is – listen to yourself more than to any teacher, don’t believe anything what anybody says, just prove it to yourself how it works for you and listen to your recordings. Your personal voice will guide you then towards natural effortlessness. In case you feel that something in your body is blocked, you might look into the matrix two point method or contact a practitioner for hypnosis to dissolve blocks of the throat.

From the Back Cover

“Behind every weakness hides a talent!” is Dr. Karin Wettig’s personal revelation. With her divorce came an almost total loss of her speaking voice. When voice therapy didn’t heal her, she decided to look for a cure in singing. Mozart Arias & her passion for Belcanto, Maria Callas, Adelina Patti and the divas of Caruso’s time found a home in her heart, never to depart. She left her home, her career, her husband, her friends and her business in northern Germany to pursue her dream to be a Belcanto singer. Once settled in Munich, her adventurous journey from a lost speaking voice to becoming a coloratura soprano began.
Personal voice trainers, Belcanto teachers & Opera Schools from all over Europe were as disillusioning as her experience in a famous local choir. An inspiring master class with Ann Reynolds gave her the impulse to write her first Belcanto Guide for singing. Still not satisfied with her voice, she started modeling Maria Callas and exploring body therapies such as Alexander Technique, Rolfing, Cantieni and Yoga. The way to her authentic voice was a path paved with lonely nights in dark churches, practicing Belcanto repertoire from Farinelli to Mozart, Bellini, Rossini and Verdi. Studying Belcanto videos, she dove deeply into the physical aspects of opera singing, while her musicological curiosity made her travel to the origins and sources of Belcanto in the Renaissance.
Suddenly miracles started happening: Her teeth aligned, her chin and jaw movement became smoother, her stiff tongue melted. In the end, she enjoyed an upright posture, better proportions, 1.5 cm more in height, emotional balance, cured sinusitis and healthy self-esteem. Her efforts were rewarded with a brilliant coloratura soprano voice. Asked for a transcript of her voice classes, she wrote her personal method down. The result is this book: An intuitive, heartfelt, yet practical approach to achieving excellence in Belcanto through effortless singing. “Body & voice awareness is the key and achieves in minutes what years of exercises never reach. Sing and you’ll never be the same.
