Book Description

“That you may believe.”

Have you ever asked God for a sign?

Throughout Scripture, God gave signs to his people, whether mighty acts during the exodus or miracles through Elijah and Elisha. Jesus was also asked for a sign. Yet despite giving seven remarkable signs, his people refused to believe him.

In Signs of the Messiah, Andreas J. Köstenberger–veteran New Testament scholar and expert on the Gospel of John–guides readers through John and highlights its plot and message. John’s Gospel is written to inspire faith in Jesus. By keeping the Gospel’s big picture in view, readers will see Jesus’ mighty signs and be compelled to trust more fully in the Messiah.

Readers will have a deeper grasp of John’s message and intent through this short and accessible introduction.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Signs of the Messiah is a compelling journey through the Gospel of John, and Kostenberger, with his expertise on this remarkable text of Scripture, is amply qualified to be your tour guide. … I especially appreciated the author’s attention to how the narrative is constructed by the inspired writer. This book promises to be a substantial foundation for anyone planning to employ this Gospel in the ministry of the word.” – Abraham Kuruvilla, senior research professor of preaching and pastoral ministries, Dallas Theological Seminary
“In this introduction to John’s Gospel, Kostenberger provides a clear, trustworthy guide to understanding and applying the powerful message of this captivating book. He draws from decades of first-rate Johannine scholarship in offering readers an engaging, well-organized, persuasively written account. You can do no better than Signs of the Messiah for a reliable historical, literary, and theological primer on John’s Gospel. Highly recommended!” – J. Scott Duvall, J. C. and Mae Fuller Professor of New Testament, Ouachita Baptist University
“This volume offers numerous fresh insights into John’s Gospel. It defends Johannine authorship, draws skillfully on scholarship and the author’s own original observations, and demonstrates how the layout of the Fourth Gospel contributes to its claims and message. It highlights traditional themes like believing, mission, and the supremacy of Christ …. Pastors, teachers, students, and all others who want to understand this Gospel and pass along its good news to others will find this book to be an outstanding resource.” – Robert Yarbrough, professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

From the Author

I love John’s Gospel! When you read John’s Gospel, you will love it too! It was written by the person closest to Jesus during his time on earth, the apostle John. I wrote this book as an introduction to John’s Gospel which is best read while reading the Gospel section by section, with a special focus on Jesus’s 7 messianic signs. Whether you are a seeker, skeptic, or believer, you will enjoy reading this book – by yourself, with a friend, as part of family devotions, or in your life group or small group at church. If you’re a pastor and getting ready to preach through John’s Gospel, I commend this little book to you as a primer helping you prepare. While I have written several other works on John’s Gospel, such as Encountering John or A Theology of John’s Gospel and Letters, this book is the most recent and most accessible work on what a church father called “the spiritual Gospel.” Take up and read!
