Book Description
This volume examines biomembrane fusion and the events of signal transduction which regulate it. It presents topics that range from fertilization and myoblast fusion, through endocytosis and exocytosis, to the fusion of intracellular membranes. Although a number of books and review articles on signal transduction and on biomembrane fusion attest to the importance of these two subjects, to date the interrelationship between them has never been detailed beyond the primary literature. This book consummates the relationship by focusing on a number of systems that have received attention recently. By documenting the current state of the art, it sets the stage for new research into the important and rapidly growing area of signal transduction during biomembrane fusion. Written by an internationally recognised group of more than 20 researchers, this text – covers every essential aspect of biomembrane fusion, including cell fusion, exocytosis, phagocytosis, secretion, intracellular membane fusion, and vesiculation; details the whole gamut of signal transduction events, from receptor stimulation through GTP-binding protein activation of effector enzymes; emphasizes the generation of second messengers and subsequent cascade mechanisms involving protein kinases and intracellular modulators, such as calmodulin. In addition, chapters conclude with final comments in which the contributors express viewpoints about the general significance and progression of their work.
