Book Description

This book looks at the common techniques used to prepare, purify and identify chemicals. Topics including distillation, recrystallisation, chromatography, elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry are discussed, and are illustrated on video on the accompanying CD-ROMs. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are covered entirely through multi-media, with animations and virtual experiments. The reader is provided with examples for interpretation, and can draw in the structures using the software provided. There is also a set of interactive self-assessment questions. In all, the multi-media software suite comprises more than twelve hours of material. Separation, Purification and Identification concludes with a Case Study on Forensic Science, in which illustrations of criminal cases where spectroscopic techniques provided evidence are given. The Molecular World series provides an integrated introduction to all branches of chemistry for both students wishing to specialise and those wishing to gain a broad understanding of chemistry and its relevance to the everyday world and to other areas of science. The books, with their Case Studies and accompanying multi-media interactive CD-ROMs, will also provide valuable resource material for teachers and lecturers. (The CD-ROMs are designed for use on a PC running Windows 95, 98, ME or 2000.)

Editorial Reviews

Review

“… clearly written and very well illustrated … a very useful and readable book and would be suitable as a library addition to support Advanced level chemistry.”

— “School Science Review, June 2003, 84, (309)”

“… Separation, Purification and Identification is a sign of new age in education … especially useful for teaching people who cannot spend long hours in the laboratories.”

— “Chemia Analityczna (Warsaw), 48, 629, 2003, p 630”

“This book with the accompanying material on CD-ROM may be thoroughly recommended as an introduction to chemical separation, purification and identification techniques at a level and in a format very well suited to the intended audience of a first year undergraduate on a chemistry or chemistry related course.”

— “Physical Sciences Educational Reviews, No 6, June 2003”

“This is an excellent course in separation and spectroscopy. The clear layout of the text and the superb accompanying CDs make it fun to work through.”

— “Chromatographia, 2003, 58, November 2003, No 9/10”

About The Molecular World
Coordinating Editor: L E Smart, The Open University, UK

This new series, co-published by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Open University, provides a broad foundation in chemistry by introducing fundamental ideas, principles and techniques. The series also demonstrates the central role of chemistry in science and the importance of a molecular approach in biology and Earth sciences. Each title is attractively presented and illustrated in full colour throughout.

The Molecular World aims to develop an integrated approach, with major themes and concepts in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry set in the context of chemistry as a whole. Examples are given that illustrate both the application of chemistry in the natural world and its importance in industry. Case studies, written by acknowledged experts in the field, are used to show how chemistry impinges on topics of social and scientific interest such as polymers, batteries, catalysts, liquid crystals and forensic science. Throughout, interactive multimedia CD-ROMs are included, covering a range of topics such as molecular structures, reaction sequences, spectra and molecular modelling. Electronic questions facilitating revision/consolidation are also used.
