Book Description

Cardiovascular medicine is witnessing an explosion in capability for remote monitoring of implantable electronic devices. Patients are being empowered to perform, either passively or actively, surveillance and follow-up functions in an effort to create more efficient systems of care. Remote monitoring has great potential to improve clinical outcomes in patients with a variety of arrhythmic and cardiac conditions, and to enhance device safety and efficacy. At the same time, systems are evolving to promote smooth and accurate acquisition of data; proper orientation of patients to assure compliance; and establishment of effective interfaces between the recipients of remote data and caregivers. Many devices are now capable of remote monitoring, including external ECG recorders, loop recorders, pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization systems. Physicians, allied health professionals and office staff need to become well versed in management of this wealth of data, and it is already clear that there are many challenges that will be faced. This book provides a technical and clinical framework for implementation of remote monitoring in the clinic, with a generous supply of clinical vignettes designed to illustrate the real-world utilization of this new technology. “”Remote Patient Monitoring in Cardiology”” discusses the clinical utility of each of these technologies, outlines the challenges present in clinical practice in incorporating these technologies, and provides case vignettes that highlight important diagnostic concepts and therapeutic implications. The book includes a review of current clinical studies pertaining to each technology so that the reader is updated on current published data as well as studies in progress.
