Book Description
Preventing Classroom Discipline Problems is a handbook, with its own self-improvement exercises, for all the skills needed to implement successful classroom management and eliminate discipline problems.
This book, based on the author’s extensive work with New York City school teachers, helps teachers to design instructional strategies to prevent, not just handle, disruptive classroom behavior. Seeman discusses more than 100 of these problems, from responding to talking in class to preventing violence from erupting in your school. This is the only text that is both a comprehensive training handbook and academic course text. The third edition includes new sections in each chapter for grades K-6, parents, strategies for school violence prevention, a computer resource guide, conflict-resolution training, systematic rewards for all grades, and methods for handling peer pressure and bullies.
It also contains a collection of supplemental online training tools. Visit Classroom Management Onlinefor more information.
Editorial Reviews
Review
A comprehensive treatment of classroom discipline. This book is not about controlling children, but rather about humanistic education with ample regard for practical solutions to disruptive behavior.
All the suggestions in this book are skillfully presented and can easily be executed. I thoroughly recommend this book to every teacher. In reading and practicing what Seeman is telling us to do, we will reduce the number of discipline problems in schools.
Essential truths, invaluable for new or experienced teachers; priceless keys to rewarding teaching, beautifully demonstrated!…a guide to successful discipline-free teaching, no matter what your style.
Excellent examples of troublesome situations, skillfully demonstrated…provides very practical discussion and learning for very real classroom problems.
I have used [this book] for several years re: class management. I especially appreciate the sections like: discriminating a behavior problem from another type of problem. [This book] has been very useful to me and to the teachers with whom I work. Thanks for your contribution to the profession. It has been important to me and the work I do.
Seeman has created a text that can be used as a self-help guide or training manual for preventing and solving discipline problems.
Seeman’s book [with a training video] offers the kind of common-sense approach to the classroom that beleaguered teachers are looking for. Even better, the just-in-time techniques are geared toward preventing discipline problems rather than reacting to them. The information is so well organized and so complete that it’s easy to find exactly what you’re looking for.
This video and the book are powerful change agents…enable teachers to feel less alone and more empowered to prevent and constructively respond to discipline problems…rich, far-reaching and practical.
Well received! Both the book and the video are recommended to all schools in Saskatchewan, Canada that need help with emotional and behavioral disorders. Also recommended to the College of Education, University of Regina, Canada.
WOW! I am so excited that, after taking Dr. Seeman’s online class, I now have a ‘cookbook’ that I can use to assist teachers in the classroom. In my job as a middle school counselor, I assist teachers in managing the behavior problems in their classrooms. This course has provided me with the information that I can use with teachers to help them view their classroom from both their and the student’s perspective. I now use at least one technique from Dr. Seeman’s book daily. It is so enlightening for teachers to know that there is a systematic way to handle problems in their classrooms to get the results that they want. I have truly seen the light bulb go on when teachers are able to identify what they can do to improve instruction, handle issues in their classrooms, and create the environment they want for their students by using this book, its training exercises and Video. Thank you, Dr. Seeman for such a wonderful and practical contribution to teacher training and to education
