    Editorial Reviews

    Review

This book provides an exploration of how managers and employees work in groups for the completion of organizational objectives. Emphasis is placed on the growing dependency on understanding the behavior and personality of communities of practice (teams) in the workplace. The textbook equips students with insights regarding the ability to manage work teams, operate and navigate teams successfully, and obtain successful results via team dynamics. Researchers tell us that opportunities to succeed need to be more abundant in today’s workplaces; the author of this book is the proverbial knock and invitation for students to open that door.

“I was impressed with the completeness of the book’s outline of topics, and the apt succinctness of the sentences. I imagined that someone whose command of English was AS a second language (but who had ‘mastered the language’ for professional competency) would find this book relatively easy to use (in getting up to speed on OB – organizational behavior). The language was clear, succinct, and neither overly ‘colorful’ nor cliché-ridden nor ridden with suboptimally nuanced word selections, as one sometimes sees when an author speaks only one language, but really well. IMO the writing was apt. I think that the text book is aptly named – ESSENTIALS of OB – not everything, but everything one needs (or even would WANT) to know, even if that were the ONLY OB book one ever read during a professional career in a complex organization (and most of MY professional career HAS been in such organizations).”

In my opinion, the quality and scope of the subject studied is sufficient. Comprehensive and detailed research. I think research is an appropriate and detailed study for students, professionals and entrepreneurs. I think they can benefit from this research. Behavior, intention, etc. in individual psychology topics are not covered enough Behavior, intention, etc. in individual psychology. Topics are not covered enough. It should be reviewed again. It should be reviewed again. Change and stress management issues have not been adequately researched. There are missing words in the glosarry section. It must be completed.
    — Dr. Bilal Çankır, Istanbul Medeniyet University

This introductory business and management text glosses over many important OB topics but, if all its content is mastered, readers likely would become conversational in the field. Online and print sources from the past 3 years are cited. Throughout the book, the language is clunky and awkward and could confuse both native English speakers and ESL students. End of chapter tests are easy but not tricky or deceptive; they should be good markers of the student’s basic comprehension of each chapter’s most basic contents. Anyone with good intelligence who works in complex organizations could possibly benefit from reading this entire text with comprehension.
    — Maynard S. Clark, RoundSquare Consulting

Reading a book on organizational behavior subject matter can be boring and arduous to read. This book, Organizational Behavior Essentials is put in plain language. It is an easy read that allows the reader to visualize the subject matter. The flow of the book is not only supported by the plain talk language but provides charts that enhance the visualization of the content. The sections in each chapter are not long and wordy. Organizational Behavior Essentials is constructed in a way that can provide organizations with what equates to a training and development guide. Organizational Behavior Essentials is a very comprehensive book that will allow any organization to come together and engage in a meaningful team-building experience. Each chapter of the book offers the reader an array of topics, short but meaningful sections with chapter summaries, and capped off with a concluding quiz. This book is a great read for individual personal development or it can be used in a team setting.

As said by Dee Hock, Managing people in the organizational setting defines the success of the organization. This book assists/supports managers to put forth organization first when it comes to organizational achievements. The book helps to understand how to on-board existing employees in organizations to create healthy, buy-ins, and conducive work culture to nurture organizational growth. As Organizational behavior is a complex setup where the managers treat human minds as their experimental lab it works on a diversity of mind-sets to work together as a high-performance work team. The ‘Organizational Behavior Essentials’ as the manuscript support a strategic framework for rejuvenating employees for better outcomes and productivity. In short, the book enables managers with a concise guide to understanding the components of the organization and developing them for the holistic development of organizations. The Q&A section provides an opportunity for the learner to understand the progress and key aspects of the concept. The chapter summary section at the end of each chapter is the linkage between the two chapters.
    — Prof. Abhijit Khurape Management Faculty, AISSMS Institute of Management, Pune

The book was easily understandable and can be applicable to all levels of Crowd. But in some places the words used are grammatically doesn’t suit the management stream. For Example, in page 17 – heading 1.7 – What OD is not: Mislead the whole concept in a total confusing state. I do understand writing a book for 100+ pages is not an easy task, but grammatical mistake will take the hard work to the negative impact . The steps of Action Research Plan change can be modified as it is confusing with repeated nature ( pg. 55). The words like – Obtrusively can be simplified into simple languages (pg.99). A subdivision Topic – 5.5 Data Analysis (Pg.101 ) is too elaborative. The Quiz which is given at the end of each topic, is much appreciable one. It is indeed an good idea for better understanding and review process for the learners. The Book can be Recommended to Students and also to people who do their Studied through Distance education mode and also to Entrepreneurs. The books can be used for B.com ( all courses ), BBA, MBA, MA HRM and other stream which has Principles of Management and Human Resources Management. Congrats and all the best to Self Management Series books and also to Mr. Ankur Mithal
    — Paul W. Harp, Adjunct Professor, Project Management North Arkansas College

OB is a very typical and comprehensive subject as per management curriculum is to be talked about. The book tries to cover every aspect of the subject for management students. The summary at the end of the chapter is the best feature of the book.
    — Dr Vivek Sharma, Faculty- Research Methods Institute of Management Studies, DAVV, Indore

The book is a congruent guide leading you from one chapter to another. Right from making readers comprehend different dimensions of evolution of HR theories, developing talent, communicating in groups and building high performance teams, the book is an insightful piece of excellence in escalating the decision making skills and motivational aspects of the readers who are aspiring to achieve parameters of professional success.

The study of organizational behavior helps to understand the impact of the entrepreneur or an organization on its workers. It gives proper information about how an entrepreneur’s attitude towards workers should be. This confirms how to make your workplace psychologically safe. It is helpful in laying the foundation for building a conducive workplace, will motivate workers and entrepreneurs to take up developmental activities and will also boost morale. In this book, the author has presented an efficient organizational behavior in very simple words, which will help the students of management to understand the different components of the concerned subject. I recommend this book to all the students to study.

I work for the government which is a massive organization. My previous work experience was in the private sector so going public was a big change for me. I’m young in my career and I work with people twice my age so I am always looking for ways to delicately shake up the work place without ruining our mission. This was a great read with solid information. I’m not going to be able to change the whole government but I’ll try to implement some of the things I’ve learned and also try to keep things I learned about as well.
    — Ashlie Sannan, Net Galley

    — Katy Corbeil, Net Galley User Whether before reading this book or afterwards, this reviewer does not know that much about organizational behavior as a broad, overarching concept. Despite my personal flaws and knowledge gaps, this book provides useful fill-ins. First and foremost, the author describes different types of various leadership styles while laying out strong and weak points of each. Next, the author is sure to define the strong points of diverse teams, where “”””diversity”””” refers to differences (among other things) in ethnic, national, religious, and genders. The use of quizzes at the end of each chapter serves as an effective reinforcement of basic lessons in the book. Further, the author displays relevant concerns for the 21st century by emphasizing the roles of diversity, morale and employee perception of the workplace. Retaining skilled workers is not simply a case of paying the right people enough money, and the value of diversity is not just a question of paying attention to various quotas. Further, this reviewer greatly appreciates the emphasis on basic cultural competence and the need to understand the people who may make up a business team, considering the increasing importance of diverse teams and the need for multilingualism and multicultural competence in leadership.

    PROS

    • – I appreciated the historical context as a generalized overview.
    • – the emphasis on global perspectives was a unique inclusion.
    • – Diversity and inclusion is all the buzz these days.
    • – Shared services is a thing.
    • – I appreciate the reward systems that not only looks at monetary incentives but rewards a sense of belonging.

    “”Grace, Librarything

This is a very good read for organizational behavior — it helped me see how I should manage, employ, and divide up job duties to my employees. I would recommend this book to anyone looking into management and leadership responsibilities.
    — Allison Marie, Librarything

This is a well-rounded introduction for beginners to the fundamentals of organizational behavior. It has a few significant shortcomings. Pros:

    • It covers all the major topics of organizational behavior.
    • The language is non-technical and easy for the layman to understand.
    • Self-quizzes (with answers shown at the end) for every chapter are a good way to verify absorption of the material.
    • There is a glossary and a bibliography (of sorts).
    • The Table of Contents is detailed enough to support finding any major topic quickly.

    –Tim Musgrove, Librarything

This serves as a good little primer volume on organizational behavior. The organization is excellent – each chapter begins with an overview of topics to be covered, then addresses the topics and ends with a short summary (followed by a short quiz). The material is presented at a very high level and is geared to only providing an introduction to the material. Although there is a bibliography at the end, i believe the authors would be much better served having a section for “”further reading”” at the end of each chapter.
