Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade, Volume III: Accelerating Communication, Technology, and Global Initiatives

This open access volume is the third of three volumes showcasing how innovation in communication, technology, and policy is accelerating Ocean Literacy during the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (the Ocean Decade). Featuring 22 chapters authored by over 90 contributors from 25 countries/regions, the volume presents global case studies on virtual learning environments, AI applications, heritage-based education, and national Ocean Literacy strategies. Presenting diverse initiatives, from immersive digital platforms and citizen science programs to national literacy campaigns and arts-based outreach, it demonstrates how creative communication and international partnerships are transforming the ways people understand and engage with the Ocean. The volume emphasizes Ocean Decade Challenge 10: Restoring society’s relationship with the Ocean through strategic communication, public engagement, and inclusive education models. Designed for researchers, educators, policymakers, and NGO leaders, it demonstrates how collaboration and innovation are advancing Ocean Literacy and fostering a more sustainable, informed, and interconnected global society.

Teresa Kennedy, PhD, is a professor at the University of Texas at Tyler, USA, a three-time Fulbright Scholar, and a former Deputy Director of NASA’s GLOBE Program. With degrees in oceanography and STEM education, she advances Ocean Literacy and sustainability through research, teaching, and global collaboration. She serves as the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE) representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Co-Chair of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Ocean Decade NGO Task Group.
