I have written this book as a guide for those who want to delve deeper into their use of colour and pigment-making practice. I hope it will complement the amazing books that I have read on the subject and fill some of the small spaces that lie in between them. I’ve been composing it for a decade both in and out of my head, and so it’s good to put into print some of the recipes, thoughts, and principles I have been teaching through my workshops.

Passionate about the craft of pigment making, I helped it receive endangered status on the Red List of Endangered Crafts 2023 produced by Heritage Crafts (see Useful Organizations). It is my hope that my book might contribute towards the craft’s progression and use. It is a snapshot of my experience as a pigment maker and artist and as such, it is deliciously incomplete, as I have much more to do and make. The material included here represents my education within an art university context in the Western Hemisphere, with a leaning towards pigment applications for oil painting techniques. The inclusion of pigment usage by other cultures is brief, although I hope that this will encourage further exploration and support of Indigenous knowledge.
