About the Author
Cathy Ragland is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology in the Dept. of Music and Dance at the University of Texas-Pan American. She is a former music critic for the San Antonio Express-News, Seattle Times and Austin American-Statesman, where she wrote a column and covered Tex-Mex, Norteña, Country, World Music and other American popular music styles. She has also worked as a folklorist and co-founded the Mariachi Academy of New York, an after-school program in East Harlem.
