Taking Catholicism and Buddhism as contrasting examples, Soko (moral theology, St. Ambrose U., Iowa) argues for the importance of the concept of human rights and the role religion can and must play in its articulation. He also emphasizes the necessity of ecological duties as a correlate to human rights, and contends that both of these concepts contribute to and are aided by a global ethic. At bottom, he says, he comes out against a general postmodernist cultural relativism, and for some type of universals, some type of moral core, in which the concept of human rights plays a role.
