Book Description

It’s surprising what people will confide from under the dryer. Two mobile hairdressers become Liverpool’s answer to Mma Ramotswe in a hilarious novel of dye jobs and covert investigation. An extremely funny debut that updates the Liverbirds for the 21st century.

Review

Shirley runs a mobile hairdressing service from her Liverpool home. Ably assisted by her camp-as-a-row-of-pink-frillies sidekick, Oli, she trims and colours the locks of young and old, fraught and fancy-free, in the local pensioners’ home and on the production line of Henshaws factory (while the boss’s back is turned towards the eighteenth green). Shes good at her job, keeping her customers happy and not just on the hairdo front. The under-dryer gossip is harmless enough, though until Shirley and Oli are encouraged to use the tools of their trade to covertly trail a clients philandering hubbie. Operation ‘D&M’ is the start of an unusual sideline for our perm-wielding duo, a cut above the usual shampoo and set. — Honno

If you like everything pink, this is the read for you. Pour yourself a glass of pink fizz and then immerse yourself in Pritchards character Shirley, from her fluffy pink bedroom slippers to her pink quilted bed, and especially the little pink diary that tells all. You will find yourself whisked off to a world of girlish giggles and charismatic gays, all searching for the love of their lives among the paraphernalia of the Cuts n Curls mobile hair salon. Shirley is blonde, delicious and forty, mother of two teenage children, Jason and Fiona. She married her childhood sweetheart, who divorced her for another model five years before our heroine started her little pink diary. Many of its hilarious pages are filled with the carry-ons of Oli, her best friend, drinking partner and workmate, the factory girls whose hair she and Oli do on a Friday afternoon, and the characters that reside in the local residential home, where life begins nearer to eighty than forty. Yes, its a read and a half enjoy!
