Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Philosopher of evil, Professor Niccolo Benedetti (recenlty seen in The Werewolf Murders, Doubleday, 1992) examines the antics of antagonistic twin industrialists in Harville, Pennsylvania. Henry, owner of a bird sanctuary, accuses Clyde of opening a cattery in order to scare off the birds. Benedetti and sidekick Ron Gentry investigate because the government is interested in an antipollution device the twins own. Gentry and the professor fail to stop a kidnapping and murder but eventually figure out why the birds disappeared. Straightforward plotting, then, with no real surprises, and the snobby, irritating Benedetti does little to enliven matters. For series fans only.

From Booklist

Although renowned Professor Niccolo Benedetti prefers to be known as a philosopher interested in the nature of evil, he has developed quite a reputation as a crime solver, leading the U.S. government to ask him to intervene in a dispute between two multimillionaire twin brothers who have developed a “smoke scrubber” that the EPA wants to get its hands on. But the brothers are so involved in their mysterious feud that they won’t even consider talking to the government. Ornithologist Clyde accuses Henry of frightening his beloved feathered friends, and feline fan Henry thinks Clyde is killing his cherished Manx cats. Benedetti is resentful of being the arbitrator until he finds there’s more to the seemingly foolish feud than first meets the eye. Assisted by his younger, more practical sidekick, Ron Gentry, the professor uncovers some shocking truths that only confirm his theories about evil. This is a mildly entertaining story masquerading as a cerebral mystery, but it nevertheless offers an unusual plot, solid writing, and genuinely appealing characters. Emily Melton
