Book Description

Discover the practical foundations of joint mobilization for extremities in this updated 8th edition of Freddy Kaltenborn’s classic book.

This volume focuses on the underlying biomechanics and fundamentals of thrust and non-thrust manual joint treatment techniques for extremities. The techniques have been carefully selected to be safe in the hands of beginning students.

Advanced mobilization progressions outside the resting position include guidelines for how and when it is safe to move toward and into the limit of movement restriction.

The updated 8th edition of The Extremities features 190 color photographs that illustrate basic and alternate grips and the use of wedges, fixation straps and mobilization straps. It includes an Extremities DVD that features over 150 short video clips (no audio) – the perfect accompaniment for visual learning outside of class.

Manual Mobilization of the Joints, Volume 1 includes:

  • Basic manual, passive extremity joint evaluation and treatment, with its hallmark marriage of functional anatomy to clinical practice
  • The underlying biomechanics and fundamentals of both non-thrust and thrust manual joint treatment techniques
  • Basic and alternate grips and the use of wedges, fixation straps and mobilization straps for longer-duration joint mobilization procedures
  • Updated color photographs with a companion video DVD in which Freddy Kaltenborn demonstrates each technique

The book presents basic extremity joint evaluation and mobilization techniques designed to fulfill the manual therapy requirement in physical therapy curriculum.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A clear and concise reference guide for the possible manual mobilizations a PT would have to do in a clinic. Kaltenborn is a Physio from Norway who specialized in Manul Therapy. With this text, he shares the foundations of manual practices in clinic as well as specific uses for each mob. Note this is not a book for the everyday person to pick up and self-certify in manual mobilization of the extremities but, in a clinical or academic setting, provide a good baseline of knowledge to use in an orthopedic setting. There are other approaches to manual therapy but this is my to to for all things mobilization.”

From the Back Cover

Freddy M. Kaltenborn was the first practitioner and instructor of manual medicine to integrate the theory and practice of orthopedic medicine with the practice of osteopathy and chiropractic. Kaltenborn worked for over 60 years to develop his world-renowned system for the manual treatment of joint conditions. He drew his inspiration from many disciplines, integrated them into a cohesive system, and then expanded and refined them to create the joint examination and treatment approach presented in this book.

“Kaltenborn teaches what he has found best in osteopathy, chiropraxy and orthopedic medicine without a trace of fringe indoctrination. Only when these different methods are all practiced by one person will it become possible to determine if one is more quickly successful than another; and which type of disorder responds best to one particular set of techniques. The only physiotherapy teacher who has achieved this eclectic status is Kaltenborn in Oslo. His approach offers an example that deserves to be followed in physiotherapy schools throughout the world.”

– James Cyriax, M.D., 1958

For over 40 years, Kaltenborn’s classic handbooks on Manual Mobilization of the Joints have introduced thousands of clinicians worldwide to the practical foundations of joint mobilization. In these books, Kaltenborn describes each test and treatment in simple and precise language reinforced by numerous clear photographs. Advanced mobilization techniques and basic traction manipulations were carefully selected to

be safe in the hands of student practitioners.
