“What a fantastic book―I could not put it down! This critical review of the strengths and weaknesses of the best-known leadership theories fundamentally enhances our understanding. Dugan’s insights are transformative. He offers ways to improve these theories rather than disregarding them based on their shortcomings. I love the notion of zombie theories―you have to read the book to find out what that is! The narratives help ground complex concepts and the reflection questions compel the reader to engage with the material.”
―Adrianna Kezar, professor for higher education, University of Southern California
“The prophetic voice of John Dugan speaks to us again. Having used the 1st edition for the past 5 years in my graduate leadership class, I know the profound effect learning from this text had on all of us. Leadership is made real and human.”
―Helen K. Lafferty, Interim President, Youngstown State University
“This book reads as a call to action for anyone dedicated to the discipline of leadership for a society fashioned for diversity, inclusion, and justice. Dugan masterfully takes the reader on a journey with the incorporation of constructs, theories, and personal narratives dispersed throughout. The critical approach of this work, coupled with the commentary offered, leaves the reader with new considerations for leadership teaching, learning, and practice.”
―Darren Pierre, PhD, Senior Lecturer, A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland
There is a clear gap in the market for a survey text on leadership theory that is interdisciplinary, designed for use with college students, and grounded in social justice. Existing texts tend to be bound to a single discipline, such as business or psychology, lack the critical perspective necessary to fully understand the justice orientation central to many contemporary leadership theories, and omit important theories designed to teach leadership at the postsecondary level. The Second Edition of Leadership Theory: Cultivating Critical Perspectives addresses each of these issues, making it the only leadership textbook comprehensive enough for standalone use in courses and leadership programs.
This survey text examines a wide range of leadership theories and applications, using critical social theory as a framework that allows for an emphasis on social justice. The book discusses the evolving nature of leadership and guides readers as they apply their learning through a critical social theory lens.
Each chapter is brought to life by a dynamic narrative from an exemplary leader. These narratives are drawn from across industries and career fields, but they all highlight individuals who are deeply engaged in the work of leadership for social justice. This Second Edition includes fresh stories from Sheri Brady, Gaby Pacheco, Kevin Martin, and others. All will serve as springboards for in-class discussion.
With clear organization and intelligent discussions of the many theories covered, Leadership Theory, Second Edition helps students build a firm and flexible foundation of knowledge that can also translate into leadership skill. Instructors will appreciate the available supplementary materials, including a facilitator’s guide, supplemental case studies, sample syllabi, structured dialogues, and learning activities tied to each chapter. Revisions bringing the content up to date add further value to this new edition.

Examine a wide range of leadership theories and their applications
Regardless of the industry or discipline they work in, organizational leaders are those most responsible for shaping society and enacting change. Perfect for students in undergraduate and graduate leadership courses, the Second Edition of Leadership Theory: Cultivating Critical Perspectives examines nearly two dozen of today’s most prominent leadership theories. You will learn the concepts central to each theory, and then you will explore its weaknesses, strengths, and applications. Throughout the text, you will critically reflect on how leadership theory and practice can work for―or against―social justice across disciplines.
