Book Description

A comprehensive, timely and entertaining account of the political, cultural and economic dynamics of more than 30 discrete countries of the Western Hemisphere, this book is updated each year, providing students with the most recent information possible. The information is presented in an objective, balanced, non-ideological context, allowing the readers to formulate their own opinions. In addition to examining individual countries, the book views Latin America as a mosaic region as a whole and emphasizes its growing influence on the world stage. Besides providing accurate and timely information on the historical and political forces that have shaped each nation, it also examines the leading cultural figures and forces, from 18th century writers to 20th century composers and singing stars to 21st century filmmakers and actors. Finally, it describes the social and economic challenges that continue to afflict this exciting and emerging region.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I have used The World Today Series Latin America version as a primary text in my Latin American seminar at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina for my ten years there as an instructor. It provides a good overview of each country in the region, to include history and current issues. Since it is updated annually, it provides good current information for my students in their study of the region. — David C. Sessoms, Latin America Seminar Director,Department of Regional Studies, Special Warfare Education Group (SWEG) I have employed the Latin America volume from the Stryker-Post “World Today” Series for 26 years in 5 different college settings. Most of these affordable and objective volumes, updated annually, were written by Professor Robert Buckman. I used them as the primary textbook with my students at the Air Command & Staff College, Troy State University, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the Army War College, and Norwich University. I reviewed these volumes for 5 major journals. — Russell W. Ramsey, Ph.D.; D Min.
