About the Author

Joseph Canning, Ph.D. (1974) in History, University of Cambridge, was formerly Reader in History at Bangor University, and is now Affiliated Lecturer in History at Cambridge University. He has published extensively in medieval political thought. Edmund King, Ph.D. (1968), in History, University of Cambridge, is Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at the University of Sheffield, His publications on the social and political history of medieval Britain include most recently King Stephen in the Yale English Monarchs Series (2010). Martial Staub, Ph.D. (1997), University of Paris X – Nanterre, is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Sheffield. He specialises in the history of the Church and urban societies in Late Medieval and Renaissance Europe and has edited i>Enzyklopädie des Mittelalters, 2 vols. (Darmstadt, 2008).
