Book Description

A story set in Kenya in 1996, Griff takes a job teaching at a small, struggling school in Nairobi. El Nino floods, bulldozed slums, street justice and widespread corruption are all around him. A story that portrays an experience of modern Africa in all its contradictions – its beauty, squalor, joy and heartbreak.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Bowen’s debut novel is instantly engaging, and relevant now more than ever. –Kelly Salter, The Big Issue

Returned volunteers sometimes write stories about their experiences overseas and we often recommend their stories to future volunteers to inform them about the country which will shortly become their home. While Jim has fictionalised his VSO experience in this story, and though Kenya has developed a great deal since he returned to the UK, Just another mzungu passing through is an excellent snapshot of what Nairobi was like then, and what it is still, in many ways like now. –Alexandra Vernon, VSO
