Book Description
George Burman Foster (1857–1918) was a key figure among the philosophers and theologians who composed the early “Chicago School.” This volume makes available the development of Foster’s religious thought by exploring his major writings as well as diverse shorter works. Conclusions are provided following each major section of the book. Through this approach we discover that Foster was laying the foundation for the emergence of American humanism.
Editorial Reviews
Review
Foster was one of the great religious skeptics. The Fundamentalist movement in American probably started in reaction to him. Controversy around him hit the front pages of the newspapers and resulted in attempts to remove him from the ministry and his teaching position. Peden has given us a wonderful look into the mind of this important thinker. –Jerome A. Stone, Author of Religious Naturalism Today; Adjunct Faculty Member, Meadville Lombard Theological School
More essential scholarship from Creighton Peden, adding to his prodigious historical biographies of eight later scholars of the Chicago School of theological liberalism, naturalism, and humanism. Knowing more of the trials and courage of George Burman Foster will help the academic community appreciate those religious attempts to stay parallel with modern science. Whether the anti-intellectual religiosity now dominating America can be transformed is, unfortunately, unlikely. –Robert B. Tapp, Professor Emeritus of Humanities, Religious Studies, and South Asian Studies, University of Minnesota; Dean and Faculty Chair Emeritus, The Humanist Institute, New York City
