Book Description
This book presents the theoretical foundations of low-noise amplifier (LNA) design, with a particular focus on ultra-low-noise amplifiers. It introduces various noise types and sources in semiconductors, examines semiconductor processes (e.g., SiGe, HEMT, MOSFET, SOI, and MMIC) for both passive and active components, and explains noise and impedance-matching techniques, noise measurement methods, possible topologies for ultra-low-noise amplifiers, design and optimization approaches, and relevant design tools. The proposed methodologies are supported by detailed design examples and case studies, including applications for the square kilometer array (SKA).
Features
- Covers the complete design process of low-noise amplifiers
- Updates amplifier design techniques and fabrication processes with real case studies
- Introduces receiver architectures
- Discusses low-noise amplification technology, its evolution, trends, and competing or complementary technologies
- Includes SKA-related design case studies aimed at the radio astronomy community
This book is intended for the scientific research community.

About the Author
Wynand Lambrechts (Senior Member, IEEE) received the BEng, MEng (with distinction), and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa, in 2013. His major field of study was electronic engineering. He has worked as an electronic engineer and a radio frequency (RF) engineer and is currently a principal electronic engineer (semiconductors) based in South Africa. He also serves as a part-time research associate at the University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Saurabh Sinha (Fellow, IEEE) received the BEng (with distinction), MEng (with distinction), and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa. His major field of study is electronic engineering. He is currently Professor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He also holds an appointment as Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Abadahigwa Bimana, SMIEEE, passed away in 2024. He received the “Diplȏme d’Ingenieur” degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the University of Kinshasa in 1988, with distinction. He joined Telecel, the first African mobile operator in 1989. In 1993, he received the “Diplȏme de Mastere” degree in Microelectronics (VLSI) from Telecom Paris Tech in Paris, France. From 1995 to 1999, he worked for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa where he was primarily engaged in the design and development of communication systems.
