Here’s an excerpt from the book …

Eat less food, lose more weight. A seemingly simple principle, right? Then why don’t we do it?

We have witnessed a “bigger is better” food culture shift in the United States that started in the 1970’s and now “Supersized,” “Biggie,” and “Grande” are the norm. Americans eat out an average of 4.2 times per week, more than any other country besides Japan.

Junk food consumption and portion sizes have been steadily increasing, which have been largely responsible for our current obesity crisis.
Many of us are so ingrained in our ways and rituals that these habits are very hard to break.

So the question becomes how do we control our portions? Read on to find out.

1. Use smaller plates & cups

You may have seen the famous book The 9-inch Diet. It claims that by switching from a standard 12-inch plate to a 9-inch plate, you will consume 30-35% less food, thus transforming our collective health. While this number has been disputed, we know this much to be true: if you use smaller plates and cups, you will likely eat and drink less.

2. Separate leftovers into different containers

Instead of using one large container to store leftovers, separate them into smaller containers with one portion in each. Breaking down huge servings is an easy way to avoid overeating.

3. Eat more greens in between meals

Eating green leafy vegetables like salads before lunch or dinner is a sure-fire way to keep from overeating. It will help curb your appetite and make you feel more full. Throw a handful of spinach in a smoothie … you won’t even taste it.

4. Separate snack foods

When you absolutely must indulge, buy snack foods in single serving sizes or put single servings into small Ziploc bags so you can control how much you eat.

5. Skip the seconds

Refuse the urge to go back for seconds. A good way to help if you’re constantly tempted is to immediately box up any leftovers when you’re done cooking and put it in the refrigerator. Remember that it takes about 20 minutes for you to actually to feel full after eating so eat slowly.
