From the Inside Flap

Historic New Mexico Churches
This compelling story of New Mexico is seen through rich layers of culture and art that evolved its historic churches. From massive mission churches to smaller adobe chapels to grand Gothic and Romanesque edifices, New Mexico is its churches, and Annie Lux tells their stories in language that is both compelling and adoring. All along the back roads and byways of New Mexico are roadside chapels and community churches, lavishly photographed by Daniel Nadelbach. Among Santa Fe’s historic edifices are the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi as well as the San Miguel Chapel, which claims to be the oldest church in the United States. Capturing our attention as well are the Loretto Chapel with its miraculous staircase and the Santuario de Guadalupe with its famous altar screen. Several Native American Pueblos are also featured, including Acoma Pueblo, whose San Esteban del Rey Church is the only existing pueblo mission church to survive the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 unscathed. This book is a journey through cultures and time, war and famine, growth and expansion, rebellion and reconciliation.
Annie Lux has written plays, screenplays, essays, and magazine articles. She studied writing at Carnegie Mellon University and at New York University, and received an MFA in playwriting from Columbia University. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
