Editorial Reviews

Review

My life and work focuses on the scientific evidence base for healthcare; this book presents evidence on the effects of the work of Peter Roberts on the lives (and deaths) of others that is just as powerful as any multi-site randomised clinical trial. This beautifully written; stunningly engaging; and powerfully challenging book provides a cogent account of the work of a harpist with dying people and premature infants. It presents the evidence to support the assertion that music is therapeutic and that it heals in the broadest sense of the word. This well crafted story of a music-thanatologist and the examination and evaluation of his work with the dying and with babies in a neonatal unit represents the best – and most moving – read I have ever had. –Professor Al;an Pearson AM, Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Adelaide, South Australia

Thfis enchanting book beautifully combines rich personal stories from the authors, accounts of the impact of music at death and dying with a scholarly research base. It is finely written and full of well-grounded wisdom and practice drawn from rich experience – a tale well told, readable for its own sake yet eminently informative, full of inspiration for healing and spiritual awakening. The authors skilfully, imaginatively and compassionately take us to that hard edge of life where suffering can seem hopeless and intractable, yet yields to courageous and heartfelt options, full of the potential for finding peace, wholeness, meaning and transformation. Inspiring and heartwarming. –Rev Professor Steve Wright, Chairman and co-founder Sacred Space Foundation, Associate Professor Faculty of Health and Social Care, University of Cumbria U.K.
