This book is all about another interesting concept, that of indigo. The history of indigo dates back as far as 2400BC with the Egyptians, and continues to this day. There is a section on Health and Safety as is usual when dealing with chemicals. This is followed by illustrated pages of all the ingredients needed, and the methods of preparing the fabric. There is a wonderful chapter on Shibori, which gives step by step illustrated instructions for different types of resisit: board clamping – Itajime; Kikko folding; stitched and gathered Shibori – Mokume; folded and stitched Shibori – Ori nui; and paste resist, to name but a few. It is worth buying the book just for this section alone, if you are not familiar with Shibori. The method of preparing the vat and dyeing fabrics and yarns are all carefully explained, together with some post-dyeing treatments. The book finishes with four projects, to give you some ideas. Everything is very well explained and illustrated – a good introduction to indigo.

About the Author
Vivien Prideaux specialises in decorative and domestic textiles, made from natural fabrics and threads and dyed with fibre reactive, indigo and cochineal dyes. Vivien’s work has been exhibited all over the British Isles, and in Japan and New Zealand. She is a member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists, and a life member of the Embroiderers’ Guild. Notable commissions include the hangings in the foyer of the Hall for Cornwall, Truro; set and costume design for several Duchy Opera productions; and research and design for the Dyes and Plants exhibit at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Her work is held in collections at the International Fashion Foundation in Japan, the National Textile Collection at Hampton Court Palace, and at the Royal Cornwall Museum and Penlee House Museum in her native Cornwall.
