Book Description

Gommecourt was a small farming community located in the Pas de Calais (formerly Artois) region of France. During World War One, it was occupied by German troops. On July 1, 1916, it witnessed a diversionary attack launched by the British army. The territorial divisions 56th (London) Division and the 46th (North Midland) Division were tasked with diverting the opposing German 52nd Infantry Division (Baden) and 2nd Guards Reserve Division (Westphalia) from the “big push” further south along a 25 mile front that came to be called the Battle of the Somme for the nearby river. The author, Nigel Cave, has extensively studied and toured the battlefields of the Somme and has authored many of these guide books complete with the history of the battle, black and white photographs, maps, and information to facilitate a greater appreciation of them. This is a must have reference for anyone touring the battlefield and if you are unable to visit the site, it will allow you to vicariously examine it.
