This book providing photocopiable material does just what its title promises. It gets teacher and students going with grammar. First of all teachers have to assess the wealth of material provided and decide whether it can be just copied out, maybe laminated and used straightaway for their own students, or whether they need to produce an adapted version with the help of the many templates provided for the large variety of games assembled. Then students will get busy practising all kinds of grammar points in an enjoyable way. In fact, even traditional games, such as snakes and ladders or some types of races appeal to learners of various levels. Doing the tasks designed to practise certain structures at the same time gets students’ imaginations flowing. For example, the questions in a race called ‘Model Modals’ might provoke discussions (e.g., What should a son do for his father? What might stop you from achieving your goals? What could you do to have more money?) and the picture cards for comparisons will make you look at objects and animals in a new way (Can you, for example, compare a mobile phone to a giraffe?!). The book contains 25 different games dealing with many tricky grammar points such as tag questions, verb tenses, parts of speech, conditionals, etc. and is therefore suitable for various learner levels. The teacher’s notes, as well as the rules written for the students, provide clear instructions whereas the built-in adaptability component helps the teacher and even the students create their own versions. About the Author
Jennifer Meldrum has worked in the field of English language teaching for over 15 years. She taught English in the United States, China, South Korea, Syria and the United Arab Emirates. She is also an ESOL teacher trainer. Jennifer co-authored two photocopiable teacher resource books for Garnet Education: Get Going with Grammar and Versatile Vocabulary. Her partnership with Barbara Reimer grew out of their working relationship at UAE University, where they found themselves taking similar approaches to their ESL classes. Their common interest in games development led to their first project, which quickly led to their second. The games in their books were piloted in their own classrooms with overwhelmingly positive reviews and they decided to share them with others. Currently, Jennifer is a teacher trainer in Boston, MA, USA and continues to work with ESL materials as an editor and writer. Barbara Reimer has been in the ESP field for over 15 years, and has taught in Canada, Japan and the Middle East. She is currently teaching in the development program at UAE University, the national university located in Al Ain, UAE. Barbara co-authored two photocopiable teacher resource books for Garnet Education: Get Going with Grammar and Versatile Vocabulary. Her partnership with Jennifer Meldrum grew out of their working relationship at UAE University, where they found themselves taking similar approaches to their ESL classes. Their common interest in games development led to their first project, which quickly led to a second. Having “field-tested’ these games in their classrooms, they decided to share them with others, in the hope that others would also find them useful.
