Book Description
French novelist Jules Verne is known around the world as the father of science fiction and an accurate predictor of much of the twentieth century. His stories have been adapted for the screen since the birth of cinema but found particular resonance with US filmmakers in the 1950s. In this authoritative and fascinating book, Francoise Schiltz looks at four of the most popular films – Around the World in 80 Days, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Mysterious Island – and argues that there were many parallels between Verne’s technological adventures and postwar America, with its themeparks, shopping malls, Levittowns and plethora of consumer goods.
