Book Description

At the 2005 World Summit, UN Member States strongly supported fair globalisation and the goals of full and productive employment and decent work for all, particularly through policies and efforts designed to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of cutting extreme poverty and hunger by half by 2015. This publication reviews the proceedings of a high-level meeting of the Economic and Social Council, held in April and July 2006 to discuss employment issues within a global development agenda. Issues discussed include: youth unemployment; women’s empowerment and increased opportunities in the workplace; promoting employment in the agriculture sector to enhance poverty reduction, gender equality and social inclusiveness; employment policy in national development programmes; the role of the private sector in promoting full employment and decent working standards; multi-sector employment strategies; as well as a number of case studies from individual countries.
