Book Description

The first comprehensive overview of contemporary inspirational music, covering its historical roots and dramatic growth into one of America’s most vital music genres.

The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music: Pop, Rock, and Worship is the first comprehensive reference work on a form of American music that is far more popular than nonfans may realize. It fills a major gap in the literature on American music and Christian culture, looking at this increasingly popular genre in the context of the overall history of religious music in the United States.

With over 200 entries, The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music covers important performers and industry figures, songs and albums, concerts and festivals, the rise of Christian radio and television, and other issues related to the growth of inspirational music. Scholars and fans alike will find a wealth of revealing information and insightful coverage illustrating the influence of gospel on modern American music with musicians such as Elvis, Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and U2.The work also examines the use of fundamental rock, pop, and rap music templates in the service of songs of faith.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Contemporary Christian music comes in many different forms, from solo acts to head-banging metal with an “inspirational” message, and its fan base has increased dramatically over the last several decades. As stated in the preface, the book is targeted toward those in the secular world, particularly academics and music critics, “who want more information about Christian artists and Christian music presented in an objective, straightforward way.” More than 200 entries cover performers, festivals, record labels, and other topics. Entries are well researched, and many include discographies and suggested reading. Editor Cusic states that the church world is “divided along black and white lines” and that contemporary Christian music appeals primarily to white audiences. He does, however, include entries for black gospel performers. Because this volume is dedicated to contemporary Christian music and not gospel, the reader is left to assume that these performers are included because of their appeal to the contemporary Christian audience, but it is not clear in all cases. Some of the topical entries, while appropriate, might have been more useful as introductory material, such as “Contemporary Christian Music, a History.” The lengthy entry on the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award would have worked better as an appendix. There are other reference works on contemporary Christian music, most notably The Billboard Guide to Contemporary Christian Music (2002) and the 1,000-page Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music, published by Hendrickson (2002). Reference books on gospel music are also available, such as Encyclopedia of American Gospel Music (Routledge, 2005). Cusic’s volume has entries for a few newcomers to the genre, but libraries owning the above works probably have the topic covered. Also available as an e-book. –Steven York
