Book Description

From Bulgaria to Berkeley, Indonesia to Australia, Roger Carrick has travelled the world as an English diplomat.

He was shadowed by the secret police in Sofia, witnessed the 1968 riots in Paris, befriended Shirley Temple at Stanford University and negotiated the withdrawal of British troops from Singapore. In between he rose to the heights of ambassador to Indonesia and High Commissioner to Australia. All in a day’s work for a distinguished diplomat.

Diplomatic Anecdotage is a reflection on his career and on the ups and downs of diplomatic life. By turns witty and thoughtful, it is an absorbing and appealing read and a unique behind-the-scenes look at diplomacy in action. It is also an account of a changing world, whose author has played a discreet role in shaping its course.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A fascinating insider’s view to diplomatic life full of humour, wisdom and good sense about how to navigate our way through a dangerous world.”Chris Patten

“A marvellously entertaining and instructive memoir that is a model of its kind.”Carl Bridge, Britain and the World

“A diplomat’s life isn’t boring, at least Roger Carrick’s wasn’t. Amusing, informative and fun.”Lord Carrington

[From an event at Ilkley Literature Festival, September 2012] “I felt a real privilege to be at this event. Sir Roger Carrick is a career diplomat who reached the highest levels in his profession, culminating in his appointment as High Commissioner to Australia … Wearing a tweed jacket and an immaculately laundered handkerchief in his pocket, he regaled the audience with tales from his distinguished career … If Sir Roger’s book is any way near as entertaining as this evening at the Ilkley Literature Festival it will be well worth buying.”Patrick McGuckin, The Pickled Egg
