About the Author
Päivi Hoikkala received her doctoral degree from Arizona State University in 1995, with research focus on 20th century American Indian urban migration and community building. Since 1997, she has been a member of the History Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she teaches courses in American Indian history, immigration, the American West and California. Her publications include several essays on Native American women; she also writes commentary on American society and politics for an online publication in her native Finland. Dorothy D. Wills is Chair of the Department of Geography and Anthropology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She holds MA and PhD degrees in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. An anthropologist and linguist, she has conducted research, taught, and worked in the development field in Senegal, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Bulgaria. Her current book research concerns cross-cultural patterns of marriage, the ways in which traditions are changing, and how such social institutions are impacted by globalization.
