Individual entries provide detailed information and authoritative commentary for the central figures, political parties and organizations, political systems and structures, major events, and key documents, including constitutions and treaties, of the region, as well as clarifying the terminology – acronyms, abbreviations and non-English terms – in use. Additionally, for each state covered, an extended narrative analyses its recent history and political and social development.
Extensive cross-referencing and a subject index assist the reader to the required material and subject bibliographies refer the researcher to source and secondary matter.

Editorial Reviews

Review

‘This dictionary provides much conveniently organized information on Southeast Asia. It will be essential for journalists, diplomats and academics, who often find themselves in situations where they need to refresh their memories at a moment’s notice.’Times Literary Supplement

‘Reading a dictionary from cover to cover may be a sign of madness. But … Michael Leifer’s canter through the A-to-Z of recent Southeast Asian politics proves surprisingly difficult to put down. Leifer’s book does not just tell the reader what is or was. It provides the links between past and present. It should be required reading for writers and editors of news from Southeast Asia and kept constantly on hand at the news desk as an agreeable antidote to that begetting sin of contemporary journalism – the absence of a sense of history or perspective. This is a very worthwhile exercise, readable, succinct and, above all, useful.’International Herald Tribune

‘… will come as a boon to all students of the region, journalists, officials and academics.’ Asian Affairs

‘[Michael Leifer] has achieved the impossible: produced a reference work that brings his subject to life.’ Asian Wall Street Journal
