Campbell Muirhead kept a meticulous diary of his wartime RAF service from the day that he set forth to train as aircrew in Canada and the USA in 1942 to the end of his wartime service with 12 Squadron Bomber Command. His descriptions of the perils of flying on bombing raids deep into the heart of Germany truly reflect the many different aspects of life in a front-line squadron in a way that can only be told by one who was there.Campbell Muirhead joined the Civil Service after leaving the RAF and lived for 30 years in Duddingston village in Edinburgh. He retired and moved to Swinton, a village in the Scottish Borders. He died in 1993. The Editor, Dr Philip Swan was a Principal Lecturer in History at the University ofLincoln from 1980 until 2009. He has published widely and his interests range from the social history of medicine to the history of Royal Air Force Bomber Command in Lincolnshire. His most recent research has been on RAF Hospital Rauceby.
